Cats are susceptible to many diseases if they are not looked after properly. One of the health problems that cats may suffer from is hair loss. • Even cats can suffer from hormonal disorders. These can cause hair loss, which is often symmetrical and occurs on both sides of the body. Some of the common hormonal problems seen among cats are hypothyroidism, Cushing's disease and hyperthyroidism.
• If a cat is suffering from an abscess, then it will keep licking the site of the abscess to alleviate the pain. This constant lick can result in loss of hair at the affected site.
• Cats suffering from food allergies can also lose their hair. Usually, when the cat consumes a food item that it is allergic to, it can cause itching. This resulting in the cat scratching itself and causing loss of hair. Even suffering from pollen or dust mite allergy can cause itching and eventual loss of hair.
• Hair loss can also occur among cats who are stressed out, anxious, nervous or constantly frightened. Many cats suffer from these psychological problems and this can result in a condition known as psychogenic alopecia.
If you notice your cat losing its fur and you think it is unnatural, it is best to take the cat to a vet to get a diagnosis for the loss of hair. Once a diagnosis is made, the vet will be able to prescribe the required medication to prevent further loss of hair. Also, once the underlying health problem is treated, the hair will regrow and your cat will look like it used to.
